Comfort food, safe food

Comfort food.  A term we all know and some of us use, we can usually identity these foods.  What does that term really mean?  What are we seeking comfort from?  And why are we turning to food for that comfort?

When emotional pain is deep and unavoidable, as it can be at times in our lives, it’s tough for us humans to just sit still in it.  We want to change it, get rid of it, soothe it.We turn outside ourselves for relief.  There are many vices I can think of that can quickly, but temporarily soothe in these moments, for most of us the least destructive is food.  To indulge in smooth creamy texture, deep warming flavors, a memory of better safer times can be evoked.  We instantly can tease our brain to find safety and security, albeit temporarily, in these escapes.

This hold true when we are socially uncomfortable.  We seek security and identify with these foods.  The right bite of comfort food can, in our mind, take us out of that awkward social situation and transport us to our big comfy couch, in our our home with a soft safe blanket.  Comfort foods, it’s a magical choice in a moment of discomfort..
