You know what you should do

“You know what you should do”?  Recently, I have been struggling with people who see my blog or hear about my show or eat my food telling me, “you know what you should do”?  Actually I’m already doing what I should and want to do.  This is not unique to me.  Each artist, the truly creative and innovative ones, hear this same thing.  During the taping of my beach bites episode I asked my featured artist, the oak street beach muralist, Jeff Zimmerman the title of his piece.  He responded “you know what you should do.” Well, it’s a public environmental mural telling the visitors through artistic expression not to feed the seagulls.  In between taping scenes we were talking and he shared that the true inspiration in the title was that while he was painting for two weeks beach visitors and observers would stop and stare and say, “you know what you should do”?

This is true in so many aspects of our lives.  With food and eating, we are constantly being told what we “should” eat or “should” change about our choices? These are the rituals and choices that we as humans hold sacred.  Our choice!  Our right to choose for ourselves, what we want. My mom has a friend whose been retired since she was born.  Her life is spent shifting from one persons house to another, beach, coves, ranch, garden, city suburbs, states….they all change based on whom she decides can handle her for the next few months.  A true wanderer, or back in the day, the free loader.  Her days are filled with reading recipes and articles about the newest and latest. “It” is always the new miracle that’s going to save your health.  She is the ultimate “you know what you should do.” The infomercial gurus dream sponge!  Needless to say, you usually walk away from any encounter with a promise of a follow up email to remind you what you should do.  Hilarious!  We all know these people, as a matter of fact as I was sharing my story with some members of my close inner circle (who must remain anonymous) I was filled with an over excited, “you know what  you should do with that??” OMG-I do know what I should do and here it is!!!  Love and laughs to us all!

Your so right about “you know what you should do” as an artist I often finish a painting and someone will say “you know what you should do”. Some times another persons view point works and some times they just don’t understand what you were aiming for in your painting. I am often given advice about marketing my art, easier said than done.
