Bacon and the Pig

New Years Lists

“This year is going to be different”. That’s what we tell ourselves with our New Year’s resolutions.  We start with all the things we aren’t going to do; eat too much chocolate, gossip, drink too much, smoke (unless drinking), date that guy or girl that’s not good for me etc.

Bacon, the take down of so many vegetarian!  There are cults based only on their love of bacon!  Tattoos of bacon and pork belly cover some people’s bodies.  Salty, crispy, chewy, it adds so much to so many dishes.  Let alone, the smell lingers in the air when it cooks, the fat particles waft into your nose and plant themselves there for the day.  But who has ever really pet a pig?

In Ireland, each year, we visit a farm with the most friendly pig.  You want to snuggle up and hug this guy.  So, you stick your  hand out to touch his snout  and “wow”, the smell is over whelming!  The phrase of smelling like a pig is used so lightly compared to the actual smell. Talk about a lingering scent.  You can’t wash your hands enough times to get the stench off.  Days and days, it’s like a permanent cologne.  This may shed some light on those cultures who choose not to eat the pig at all!  Don’t pass judgement until you’ve smelled that smell, for real.  Then you decide how much you want that bacon.

Bacon yum or ick?  Tell me your view.
