You’ve heard it stated so many times before, our emotional relationship with food is very complex. But what exactly does that means? So many of us think that we are exempt from these complexities. We may even believe that to us, “food is food, it fuels your body and that’s enough.” Or “ I have simple tastes” But is that really true?
Dining with others can be such an exciting concept. We may even be going to our favorite restaurant. We anticipate and look forward to ordering our favorite dish. Every time we’ve eaten it, we’ve loved it. So, this time we expect the same.
Well, let’s just say, something happens. We see it in the movies all the time. Let’s say your significant other has invited you out to your favorite restaurant, encouraged you to order your favorite dish, then proceeds to break up with you. Being out in public, you are required to limit the expression of some serious emotions. So, you pick up your fork and eat. More than likely, that once favorite dish has now dropped to the bottom of the list of food you’ll ever crave again.
The same holds true in the reverse. You could be eating something just okay tasting and if you hear some fabulous news, that will become your happy food.
Emotions, they attach themselves to food because we all eat, usually at least three times a day. Chances are we will be experiencing something during those times. Think about it, it’s very complex. Maybe your likes and dislikes are not so simple after all!!
