I don’t have to tell many of you that we are an easily distracted society. Call it multitasking, call it socializing via media, call it whatever you want, but the truth is we have only half a brain of attention in what and where we are at all times. I know it seems fun and even necessary at time, but aren’t we cheating ourselves? Especially when it comes to eating. If we ͞eat with our eyes first͟, as they say, then what do we SEE about our food if we are staring at a screen?
When it comes to human and animal interaction, one of the greatest compliments to give another’s spirit is to see them , acknowledge them and be present with them. Listening to their shares with either word, expression or body language. If we do not care for someone and we want to let them know it, we ignore them. Sometimes not even looking or speaking to them when we are face to face! Now, what are we saying about our beautifully prepared and presented food if we refuse to rightfully acknowledge its smell, taste, and texture? If we are only half paying attention in life than we are only half living. If we could gift ourselves one thing today, I suggest to put the electronic distractions aside and share a meal with a person (or pet) you really care about. That is appreciating the “present of the present”
Tell me what you do today to stop and pay attention. Sometimes I know it takes effort!
