Sometime not winning is like a tough bite of steak. You don’t ever want to have to swallow it. We want to spit it out, letting it fly, at a high speed, across the room and scream “yuck!”, but you just don’t, because this response is never appropriate. We can pull it out of our mouths obviously and set it on the side of our plates knowing it will be noticed by others. We can also be much more subtle and gently remove it from our mouths into our napkins, but we know someone will find it there eventually. Or, do we just swallow that bite?
In the game of business and life we win some we don’t win some, how do we handle the not wins? Just like our bite of steak fat, either way, it’s not what we want but how do we choose to respond. In high end, expensive catering business, in our “one cow” town (a Mrs. O’Leary’s cow reference of course), there is more that goes into a clients choice of caterer than just outstanding food. It can be venue, location, size, and look, all of these factor into a choice.
It can be a political decision, I’ll give you this event to keep you happy, and I’ll scratch your back to get something else in the future. Then there are some who just don’t give a damn, they want the best of the best. Either way we can’t assume the entire steak meal is bad just because of that one bite. Unless we take another, we will never know how amazing that steak can be. The same is true with the non wins, there could be the biggest win yet to come.
That’s why we may choose to just swallow the bad bite. How do you choose to respond to a non win? Do you spit that fat across the room, take it out or swallow it? Share with me.
